Creating calm in your inner world

Creating calm in your inner world

During these evolving times, there are shared feelings of fear and uncertainty. A question that we all face is: How can we create a sense of calm in our inner world?

There will be times when we don't feel content or calm and we feel a surge of discontentment. But even in those times, we can take small steps to feel as calm as we can possibly be.  Through small steps, we can help ourselves weather the storm and in turn strengthen ourselves from within.

Monitor information overload.

We all want to stay informed with the latest news, but it's easy to get overwhelmed. Learn what you need to learn, but don't get immersed into a three-hour scroll on social media or news sites. Be conscious of  your screen time and what type of news/information you are exposing yourself to on a daily basis.

Practice gratitude

In the face of challenge, it is natural to slip into tunnel vision and focus on what’s going wrong instead of noticing what’s going right. A simple method of practicing gratitude is taking the time to write down  three things each day that you feel grateful for. This can help encourage a balanced perspective on your day-to-day experience and remind yourself of the good in your life. There is always something to be grateful for.

Move your body for your mind

It is known that exercise boosts mental well-being. Exercising for just 10 minutes can release happy endorphins and feel good chemicals that help create a state of mental and physical peace. Choose what works for you such as walking, home workouts, yoga, stretching. Make time within your day for some type of physical movement, your mind will thank you for it.

Journal your thoughts

Journaling is an amazing way to get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. By writing down your inner thoughts and worries can help you rationalise and make sense of them. By taking time to journal each day, you’re giving yourself the chance to process your thoughts and feelings. This is a healthy and calming method to express emotions in a safe and private space.

Create a to do list

Writing down basic tasks and projects helps clear your mind and give you a focus.  Personally speaking, I am more likely to achieve/do something if I write it down. It imprints the task in my mind, then I take action and do it. Action can help to counteract anxiety and worry. Mundane tasks such as clearing clutter, organising and cleaning can help create a sense of calm and a healthier living environment.

Self-care is the best care

Remember to treat yourself during these times. Pamper yourself by a long relaxing bath. Listen to music to soothe your soul. Meditate and connect with yourself.  Light that scented candle that you were saving for a special occasion. Curl up on the sofa with a book that you haven’t got a chance to read yet. Allow yourself to listen to podcasts and watch films/ TV series that interest you. This is an opportunity to unwind, slow down and be gentle with yourself.

It’s important to remember that everyone is unique and there isn’t a “one size fits all” method when it comes to feeling calm.  As you go about your day, observe the times when you feel most at ease and make note of what you’re doing at that time. Explore what works for you as you aim to create calmness within your world at present.
